This traditional white powder would be in every woman’s cupboard for baking at one time (ask your mum or gran) and would be used as a natural soothing kitchen remedy too. Bicarbonate of soda neutralises and I have always added it to soup containing cabbage or lentils to help avoid that flatulence that often accompanies these foods.
A teaspoon to 250ml hot water will calm heartburn and in a cup of cold water will help ease cyctitis, the paste was used to calm bee stings and nappy rash whilst a tsp baking soda mixed with the juice of half a lemon and some warm water will ease a headache…who’d have thought!
It can even clean and whiten teeth (they have bicarb of soda tooth-paste these days but if you ever run out, you know what you can use!!).
What a fabulous emergency kitchen remedy…
